The PHS Girls Golf Team got off to a great start in Week 1. Different from the other Fall sports, the competition portion of the girls golf season begins only 2 days after the first practice. So most golf programs spend week 1 of the regular season playing several 18 hole Invitationals before the student athletes return back to school. The Lady Pilgrims did exactly that last week when they competed three 18 hole invitationals and one 9 hole dual match. On Monday August 1, the Lady Pilgrims traveled to Lafayette to compete in the Harrison Invite at Coyote Crossing GC. The first test of the young season included a very strong field. The Lady Pilgrims faired extremely well and finished 3rd overall with team score of 362 which was only 5 strokes behind champion Logansport and second place Heritage Christian who both shot 357. The Pilgrims were lead by the talented sophomore Noelle Hutchings who fired a 93 on the day. On Tuesday August 2nd, the Pilgrims hosted a 12 team field at Pretty Lake Golf Club. It was perfect day for golf and the course was in immaculate condition. The ladies racked a up another 3rd place finish this time missing out the championship hardware by only two strokes. The 366 team score put up by the Lady Pilgrims that day would have won the championship the year prior. Unfortunately New Prairie(364) and Tippy Valley(365) produced scores just slightly better. The varsity team members were incredibly consistent with all 5 varsity golfers shooting within 6 strokes of each other. Senior Elania McDonald shot a team best 90 on the day. The Pilgrims' JV competed in the invite as well and bested numerous varsity teams with a score of 416. On Thursday the Pilgrims competed in their first 9 hole match of the season when Chesterton and Winamac visited PLGC. The ladies earned 2 head to head victories. The Lady Pilgrims shot 174 as team which topped Chesterton's 204 and Winamac's 231. On this day junior Hannah Lafree led the Pilgrims with a very consistent round of 42(3 pars and 6 bogeys). The Lady Pilgrims finished the week with another trip to the south this time to Monticello Indiana for the Twin Lakes Invite. Plymouth was able to shoot their best 18 hole team round of the young season with a 357. That was good enough to earn the Pilgrims a second place finish on the day which only 6 strokes behind Logansport Berries. Two Pilgrims were able to break into the 80s for the first time this year. Elaina McDonald continued her hot start to the season by shooting 85 which earned her a 5th place medalist position for the tournament. Junior Madeline Borden capped off a great first week with an 86. The Lady Pilgrims are coached by first year Head Coach and PHS Alumni Heather Woodward and assisted by Sarah Vanvactor both of whom played collegiate golf. Plymouth will host 2 more nine hole matches this week at Pretty Lake GC on Wednesday (Michigan City) and Thursday (Laporte) before traveling on Saturday to the Western Invite. There is no charge to watch girls golf match, so come out and see the very talented and exciting Lady Pilgrims in action this week!
