It was a busy Tuesday across Plymouth Athletics, with teams competing in cross country, tennis, soccer, and volleyball. The day featured gritty performances, breakthrough wins, and valuable early-season lessons. ⸻ Cross Country – Both Teams Earn Runner-Up at Bremen The Plymouth Rockies Cross Country teams turned in standout efforts at Bremen, with both the boys and girls finishing runner-up. • Girls: Plymouth scored 39 points, just behind Fairfield (29). Vivy Miller claimed the individual title in 20:32, while teammates Brooklyn Scruggs (22:11), Lauren Gurtner (22:19), Lydia Wray (22:32), and Ryleigh Schadek (22:50) all placed inside the top 11. Plymouth’s average team time of 22:05 was just behind Fairfield’s 21:30. • Boys: Plymouth scored 55, falling just seven points short of host Bremen (48). Freddy Kallenberg led the way with a 6th-place finish (18:27), joined by top-20 runs from Nolan Carroll (19:06, 8th), Aidan Faulstich (19:29, 10th), Chase Holderread (19:59, 15th), and Adan Macias (20:00, 16th). Plymouth’s average team time was 19:24. Both squads showed depth and balance, with multiple runners cracking the top 15—an encouraging sign for the weeks ahead. ⸻ Boys Tennis – Tough Night at Peru The Boys Tennis team traveled to Thrush Courts in Peru and fell 5-0 to a strong Bengal Tigers squad. • Singles: 1S Liam Hanyzewski lost 6-3, 6-1; 2S Jonah Rich fell 6-0, 6-0; 3S Caleb Edmiston dropped a 6-0, 6-0 match. • Doubles: 1D Nick Manzuk & Owen Walleske fell 6-2, 6-0; 2D Benson Prater & Landon Tyler battled but lost 6-4, 6-1. Coach’s Quote: “It was a rough night for us overall tonight. Liam competed hard and showed some nice things on the 1S court. He was able to use some skills and tactics he worked on in practice yesterday and battled admirably. Thankfully, we have another opportunity tomorrow night. Hopefully we can have a short memory but still learn from this.” The loss drops Plymouth to 2-4 overall, 0-1 in NLC play. ⸻ Girls Soccer – Tigers Too Strong The Plymouth Girls Soccer teams opened NLC play at Warsaw and ran into a tough Tigers program. • JV: Lost 5-1 despite battling throughout. • Varsity: Fell 8-1, but generated several offensive looks and showed improvement in stretches. While Warsaw controlled the matches, the Pilgrims gained valuable experience as they continue to develop in the early season. ⸻ Volleyball – Mixed Results Across Levels Varsity: Marian 3, Plymouth 2 The Varsity Volleyball team hosted Mishawaka Marian in a five-set thriller, falling just short despite a spirited comeback (19-25, 23-25, 25-22, 27-25, 5-15). Plymouth moves to 3-2 overall. • Kills: Jersey Hunter (18), Eva Sheedy (12) • Assists: Olivia Ringer (39) • Aces: Sophia Stein (3), Emaline Van Duyne (2), Sheedy (2) • Defense: Hunter & Van Duyne (13 digs each), Ringer & Sheedy (11 each) Coach Koss: “We didn’t come out as strong as we would have liked, but our leaders stepped up in the 3rd and 4th sets. Jersey was outstanding defensively, Eva dominated at the net, and Olivia ran the offense with determination. This will serve as a valuable lesson for us moving forward.” Junior Varsity: Plymouth 2, Marian 1 The JV Pilgrims edged Marian in three sets (25-19, 19-25, 15-12). • Standouts: Trenity Ringer (4 aces, 8 digs), Cordelia Cofer (5 kills, 3 blocks), Birkley Cooper (6 kills), Claire Rosas (15 assists), Carmen Garcia (10 digs), Paige Frank (3 blocks). Freshman: Marian 2, Plymouth 0 The Freshman squad fell in straight sets (11-25, 14-25), gaining valuable experience against one of the area’s strongest programs.
