By Brent Corbett | Apr 23, 2023 9:27 AM

Plymouth Girls Tennis hosted their annual JV Tennis Tournament on Saturday, getting about half of the tournament completed before rained delayed the tourney, and then a crazy rain/hail storm put an end to the weather-shortened day. Six programs travelled to Plymouth to compete, Chesterton, Delta, FW Blackhawk Christian, Goshen, Kokomo, and Portage, while Plymouth played two teams, a Red team and a White team. Team final point totals were not tabulated, but Plymouth Red was having a very successful day overall, winning 6 of their 7 completed matches at the time of the cancellation. Plymouth Red was certain to finish in the top 3 placings, with Chesterton and Delta in the mix for the title as well. The three Plymouth Red singles players, 1S Alivia Kizer (2-0), 2S Izzie Wray (1-0), and 3S Natalie Sheely (1-0) combined to go 4-0 on the day, with Alivia set to play in the 1S Finals and Izzie and Natalie with favorable draws to get to the Finals of their respective brackets as well. The Plymouth Red 1D team of Cloe Byrd-Emma Jackson lost their First Round match to Chesterton but beat Portage in the backdraw to make the 5th Place Match, while the Plymouth Red 2D team of Marley Christy-Maddy Thangam won their opening match against the Plymouth White duo of MJ Himes-Marisa Langfeldt to make the Semi-Final round of the tourney. The Plymouth White team consisted of lower lineup players from Plymouth’s normal JV lineup. Those Plymouth players had to “play up” several positions Saturday, and had some competitive matches and successes as well. 1S Claire Lewandowski took Goshen’s 1S to the brink before failing 10-6 in the super-tiebreaker. Freshmen 2S Sophia Cantero and 3S Mia Hartley saw her first singles action of the season and performed admirably. Sophia lost to Portage’s 2S player 10-8 in the super-tiebreaker while Mia lost to a strong Delta 3S player. The Plymouth White 2D team of MJ Himes-Marisa Langfeldt lost to the Plymouth Red team, but beat FW Blackhawk’s 2D team by “double-bagel” in their backdraw match. The highlight of the day for the Plymouth White was the 1D performance by junior cousins Jo Houin and Lena Houin, who won convincing matches over the 1D teams from Kokomo and Goshen to make their way to the Finals of their bracket! PHS Girls Tennis will be back at it with a home match on Tuesday vs. the Concord Minutemen starting about 5:30! Go Big Red! #PTforLIFE
