Plymouth Athletics Recap: Freshman Volleyball Earns First Win, Varsity Volleyball Rolls, Cross Country Shines at Goshen, Freshman Football Get Road Victory

It was another busy Thursday night for Plymouth Athletics, with volleyball, soccer, tennis, cross country, and football all in action. The day was highlighted by the Freshman Volleyball team’s first victory of the season and strong performances from both Varsity Volleyball and Cross Country. ⸻ Volleyball Freshman: Plymouth 2, South Bend St. Joe 1 The Plymouth Freshman Volleyball team earned its first win of the 2025 season with a gritty three-set triumph over South Bend St. Joe (25-22, 22-25, 15-11). The Pilgrims grabbed the opening set before narrowly falling in the second. In the decisive frame, they regrouped and finished strong, showing excellent teamwork and composure despite players adjusting to new positions. Junior Varsity: South Bend St. Joe 2, Plymouth 0 The JV Pilgrims dropped a competitive two-set match (19-25, 20-25), evening their record at 2-2. Birkley Cooper tallied 5 kills, while Claire Rosas contributed 7 assists and 4 service aces. Despite the setback, Plymouth showed strong effort and will look to rebound quickly. Varsity: Plymouth 3, South Bend St. Joe 1 The Varsity squad picked up its second straight win, defeating St. Joe in four sets (25-21, 25-23, 20-25, 25-20). Jersey Hunter powered the offense with 11 kills and 13 digs, while Eva Sheedy added 7 kills and 9 digs. Olivia Ringer set the tempo with 20 assists, 13 digs, and 3 aces, and Kristin Manges contributed 4 aces of her own. Plymouth improves to 3-1 on the year. ⸻ Boys Soccer: Plymouth 1, Argos 1 The Plymouth Varsity Girls Soccer team traveled to Argos and battled to a 1-1 draw. Carley Dias, assisted by Ivy Cooper, scored in the 65th minute to even the match after Argos struck first just four minutes earlier. Plymouth outshot Argos 13-2 and dominated possession, but stellar goalkeeping from Argos and missed opportunities kept the Pilgrims from pulling away. Keeper Lily Drevecky recorded 1 save, while the defense and midfield pressured throughout, highlighted by Ella Young’s 20 steals. Plymouth moves to 0-0-2 overall. ⸻ Boys Tennis: Wawasee 5, Plymouth 0 Facing the reigning NLC Champion Warriors on the road, the Pilgrim Boys Tennis team fell 5-0 in Syracuse. Though Plymouth was outmatched, the 1D duo of Owen Walleske and Benson Prater won a tight opening set 6-3 before falling in three sets, showing resilience against a top-tier opponent. Coach praised the effort, noting the team is still young but gaining valuable experience against quality competition. Plymouth drops to 2-1 overall, 0-1 in NLC play. ⸻ Cross Country – Goshen Invitational Girls Highlights Vivy Miller headlined the Lady Pilgrims’ performance with a runner-up finish in 20:14. Brooklyn Scruggs (21:32) and Lauren Gurtner (22:11) also cracked the top 10, while Ryleigh Schadek (22:51) and Eliana Gifford (22:58) rounded out a strong top five. Boys Highlights Senior Freddy Kallenberg ran a standout race, finishing 2nd overall in 16:55, just two seconds off the winning pace. Ethan Podlesak (18:06) and Aidan Faulstich (19:14) also posted strong times in the top 15. Plymouth’s depth was on display with Nolan Caroll (19:15), Adan Macias (19:53), and Jaxon O’Conner (19:58) also breaking the 20-minute mark. ⸻ Freshman Football: Plymouth 20, Concord 6 The Freshman Rockies earned a decisive 20-6 victory over Concord. McKoy Gantz found the end zone twice, while Spencer Goebel added a touchdown of his own. Defensively, Grady Scott forced a fumble recovery, while Carter Klingerman, Iker Mendoza, and Bentley Jimenez each recorded interceptions to spark the victory.
