The Plymouth Pilgrims opened their week with strong competition across three sports, showing grit and growth as the fall season continues. Girls Golf The Lady Pilgrims took on Tippecanoe Valley and Bremen on Monday evening, finishing with a team score of 213, just behind Valley’s 207, but ahead of Bremen’s 265. Senior Taylor Hauptmann led Plymouth with a 43, while Meredith Borden carded a 52. Hanley Feldman (64), Sydney Manuwal (71), and Katy Longanecker (54) rounded out the scoring. Tippecanoe Valley’s Savana Miller earned medalist honors with a 41. Head Coach praised the effort, saying: “We had a couple solid scores today and a couple just were not able to fully get it going like they would have liked. Golf can be a challenging game, but I am proud of how hard they competed. We’ll use this week of practice to sharpen things up as we head into conference play.” The Pilgrims now turn their attention to NLC action starting next week. Boys Tennis The Pilgrim Boys Tennis team opened their season at the Mary Beth Hunter Tennis Complex, sweeping South Bend Washington 5–0 in their home debut. Sophomore Liam Hanyzewski set the tone at No. 1 Singles, defeating Eric Bailey 6-2, 6-1, while freshman Caleb Edmiston showed promise at No. 2 Singles with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout win over Jacob Maichowski. The rest of the lineup benefited from default victories, giving varsity debuts to Logan Nelson (3S), the doubles pairing of Nick Manzuk & Owen Walleske (1D), and Benson Prater & Landon Tyler (2D)—all recording their first career varsity wins. Coach noted the importance of the opening match, despite Washington having only two eligible players: “We’re very inexperienced, so to start the season with a win and gain some confidence is a positive thing. Both Liam and Caleb are younger guys, and I’m excited to watch them improve throughout the season.” Boys Soccer On the pitch, Plymouth Boys Soccer battled to a 1-1 draw against Bremen in their season opener. After trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Pilgrims answered back in the second half with a goal from Chris Rosas, assisted by Carlos Nieves. Plymouth controlled much of the possession and generated multiple scoring chances but couldn’t find the winning strike. Coach reflected on the performance: “Bremen plays hard and defends well. We controlled the game and had multiple chances to put it away, but the ball didn’t go our way. We’ll build on this and head into Argos looking for our first win.”
