Over Easter weekend, the Plymouth Lady Pilgrims tennis team embraced both the challenges of high-level competition and unpredictable Indiana weather, closing the weekend with a gritty win and a clearer picture of their postseason potential. On Good Friday, the Lady Pilgrims hosted perennial sectional contender Culver Academies and battled hard but came up short, falling 1-4 in the varsity matchup. The lone win of the day came from the dependable No. 1 doubles pairing of Marley Christy and Emma Jackson, who rolled to a dominant 6-0, 6-1 victory, continuing their strong spring campaign. In singles play, Tynley Gantz and Sophia Cantero faced stiff resistance in their straight-set losses, while Mia Hartley showed resilience, taking her match to three sets before falling 1-6, 6-1, 6-4. At No. 2 doubles, Marisa Langfeldt and Lydia Wray battled back to win the second set before falling in the third, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, in one of the tightest matches of the evening. The JV squad also competed against Culver and came away with a 6-3 loss, though there were bright spots across the board. Allison Grobe picked up a solid win in singles play, taking her match 4-0, 4-1, while the doubles pairings of Addie Hundt & Natalie Sheely and Meredith Borden & Jayden Trump-Haskins both notched victories to highlight the team’s continued development. When Saturday’s varsity tournament was rained out, the Lady Pilgrims didn’t let the weather stop them—instead, they packed their racquets and headed to Culver Academies’ indoor courts, where they faced a pair of formidable non-conference opponents. In Match 1, the Pilgrims squared off with district-ranked Crown Point, pushing the Bulldogs to the wire in a narrow 3-2 loss. Sophia Cantero earned a gritty win at No. 2 singles, storming back to win the second set and closing it out in a super tiebreaker, 3-6, 6-0, 10-4. Christy and Jackson again delivered in doubles, gutting out a tough 6-3, 7-6 (3) win at the top line. At No. 2 doubles, Sheely and Wray came heartbreakingly close to the deciding point, falling 3-6, 7-5, 11-9 in a nail-biter. The Pilgrims didn’t let that loss linger long. In Match 2, they dominated Kankakee Valley, sweeping all five matches in a statement 5-0 team victory. Gantz bounced back with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles, while Cantero and Hartley each claimed straight-set wins to sweep singles play. Both doubles teams again prevailed, with Christy and Jackson rallying from a set down to win 4-6, 6-1, 10-6, and Langfeldt and Sheely finishing the day with a convincing 6-3, 6-2 win.
