The Plymouth Lady Pilgrims tennis team traveled to Valparaiso on Monday night and returned home with a hard-fought 3-2 team victory, proving once again that perseverance and poise under pressure are defining traits of this year’s squad. In a match filled with extended rallies and emotional momentum swings, 2 Singles player Sophia Cantero delivered the night’s most dramatic performance. After dropping the first set in a tiebreaker, Cantero stormed back with a 7-6(5) second set and closed out the deciding third with a 6-3 win, showcasing incredible focus and mental toughness. At 3 Singles, Mia Hartley turned in a confident, steady performance, controlling the tempo en route to a 6-4, 6-4 victory. The doubles teams continued to be a cornerstone of Plymouth’s success, with Marley Christy and Emma Jackson earning a 6-4, 6-2 win at 1 Doubles. Meanwhile, Natalie Sheely and Lydia Wray dominated at 2 Doubles with a 6-1, 6-2 win, putting an exclamation point on a tremendous team effort. While 1 Singles player Tynley Gantz dropped her match in a tough three-set battle (1-6, 6-3, 6-3), her spirited comeback attempt added to the evening’s intensity and showcased the depth of determination throughout the Pilgrims’ lineup. On the JV courts, the Lady Pilgrims faced a deep Valpo squad and fell 11-2, but saw bright spots in the doubles play of Addie Hundt & Meredith Borden and Marisa Langfeldt & Jayden Trump-Haskins, who notched the team’s two victories with strong communication and aggressive net play. With momentum building and confidence growing, the Lady Pilgrims are showing they can battle with the best—at home or on the road. Monday’s win over a traditionally strong Valparaiso program is yet another step forward in what’s shaping up to be a special season.
