The Plymouth High School Girls Tennis team kicked off the 2025 season in dominant fashion on Saturday afternoon, sweeping West Lafayette 5-0 on the road. With a mix of seasoned leadership and first-time varsity contributors, the Lady Pilgrims delivered a statement win to begin the year. Senior standout Tynley Gantz set the tone at #1 Singles, showcasing her poise and power. After falling behind 4-3 in the opening set, Gantz found another gear—winning nine of the final 11 games to secure a 6-4, 6-2 victory. Junior Sophia Cantero followed with a commanding 6-1, 6-1 win at #2 Singles, notching her first career varsity singles win. Senior Natalie Sheely rounded out singles play with a confident 6-2, 6-2 performance at the #3 spot. In doubles action, the pairing of Junior Mia Hartley and Senior Emma Jackson clicked immediately at #1 Doubles, rolling to a 6-2, 6-2 win. Meanwhile, the final match of the day brought plenty of drama as Junior Marisa Langfeldt and Freshman Lydia Wray battled through a three-set marathon to win 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 at #2 Doubles. The victory marked first varsity wins for Sheely, Hartley, Langfeldt, and Wray. “This was a great way to open the season,” said Head Coach Haeck. “West Lafayette has a strong tennis tradition and came ready to compete. With only three players returning with varsity experience—and very little time on outdoor courts—I’m proud of how our girls responded. Their work in practice showed today.” On the Junior Varsity side, the match finished in a 6-6 draw, with several Pilgrims earning valuable experience and early-season confidence. Notable performances included doubles wins by Lilly Aquila and Jayden Trump Haskins (twice), and a dominant 6-0 win from the sister duo of Katelyn and Allison Golba. Coach Haeck added, “Just like the Varsity, our JV girls are learning on the fly with limited experience. It was great to see them out on the courts competing hard on a beautiful day.” The Lady Pilgrims now turn their attention to a challenging road match at Valparaiso on Monday, April 14, with action beginning at 5:30 PM.
