The Plymouth Pilgrims Varsity Baseball team officially kicked off their 2024 season on Saturday with a home matchup against Columbia City. Although the Pilgrims dropped the contest 12-0, the game provided early season experience and set a foundation for growth moving forward. Senior Preston Wolfe was a bright spot for Plymouth, leading the offense with a 3-for-4 day at the plate. Wolfe consistently found ways to reach base and showed leadership in a challenging opener. Ethan Hall and Nick Manzuk also contributed with a hit apiece, giving the Pilgrims a total of five hits on the day. Columbia City struck early, scoring two runs in the first inning and two more in the second to take a quick 4-0 lead. The visiting squad continued to capitalize on scoring chances, steadily extending their lead throughout the game. Plymouth struggled defensively, committing three errors, which gave Columbia City extra opportunities to put runs on the board. Wolfe started on the mound for Plymouth, while Carson Weidner, Nick Manzuk, and Adan Macias all saw action in relief. Despite the tough outing, the pitching staff gained valuable game experience that will serve them well throughout the season. The Pilgrims will use this game as a stepping stone to grow as a team. With a mix of veteran leadership and young talent, Plymouth looks to bounce back and build momentum as the season progresses.
