Baseball - Pilgrims Get Opening Day Wins Over New Haven

The Pilgrims hosted the New Haven Bulldogs on Saturday to open the season up for the Pilgrims and both teams came out with strong performances getting 2 wins with the Varsity winning 10-3 and JV getting the 7-6 in a 5 inning contest win. The Varsity would get the day going by playing 1st with the JV following the Pilgrims would set the tone with getting on the board early with Plymouth getting a run in the first inning and shutting down the Bulldogs offense early. In the 3rd inning the Pilgrims would get 7 runs across to blow the game open and allowed for some bench players to get some action and experience. The Bulldogs would answer in the 5th and get 1 run across but the Pilgrims would respond in the 6th with 2 more runs. The Pilgrims pitching held the Bulldogs to just 3 hits on the day and struck out 9 while only walking 2. Leading the Pilgrim attack was Preston Wolfe going 2 for 4 with a triple and 2 rbis. Trey Delp went 1 for 4 but had 3 rbis while Senior Ryan Jolly had 3 walks on the day. Coach Wolfe was happy with the way the Pilgrims played and was happy a lot of guys got an opportunity to get better in areas. The Jv Pilgrims would struggle defensively to start the game with 2 errors that would allow the JV Bulldogs to get 3 run across early but would settle down as the game went on. Pilgrim pitchers would get out of some tough jams with being able to throw strikes and only walking 2 batters. The Pilgrims would answer answer in the 1st with getting a run across and then got 2 run in the 2nd and 3 in the 3rd inning. Leading the Pilgrims in hitting were Grady Metsker going 3 for 3 with 3 rbis, Owen Walleske went 2 for 2 with a walk, Drake Feece went 1 for 1 with an rbi. The Pilgrims had 9 hits on the day and 6 walks as a team. Grady Metsker would get his first win on the mound going 3 innings with 1 walk and 5 strikeouts. The Pilgrims will now host St. Joe on Thursday, April 4th at the JV field and Bill Nixon Field starting and 5 Pm. The Varsity then will travel to Championship Park in Kokomo on Saturday to take on Guerin Catholic and Western starting at 1 PM.
